Getting ahead of Carbon Reduction targets – keeping it simple

Embracing Duty Holder Responsibilities

The Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and its relative Statutory Instruments place a responsibility on the duty holder to ensure assets employed at their sites are fit for purpose, maintained and inspected as required to keep them operating safely. This invariably involves 3rd party visits to sites from vendors, maintainers and inspection bodies.

The duty holder therefore has an opportunity to discharge their responsibility in a way which will ensure carbon production is optimised, simply by reducing these visits.

Embracing Site Management Responsibilities

The Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and its relative Statutory Instruments place a responsibility on the duty holder to ensure people who are working at their sites are working safely and that they are not exposed to unreasonable Health & Safety risks. This invariably involves conducting risk assessments, the output of which yield local policy and procedures.

Inductions, supervision and managing risks whilst traveling across customer sites being typical risk management approaches all prolong carbon production. Therefore it logically follows – that the longer visitors spend at a customer site, the longer they are exposed to the Health & Safety risks and the more carbon which is produced.

The site manager therefore has an opportunity to discharge their responsibility in a way which will ensure carbon production is optimised and exposure to Health & Safety risks reduced by optimising visit efficiency.

Carbon Reduction – Smart Solutions

Quick wins

In my experience the really smart solutions are always the simple ones.

Keeping time spent at customer sites to a minimum and reducing the number of visits may sound over simplistic. However, unannounced visits, no shows and an inaccurate asset list are a few thought starters for which I will share my own experience.
